Understanding the Awareness Gap
Hepatitis B is a serious viral infection that attacks the liver and can lead to chronic disease, liver cirrhosis, and even liver cancer if left untreated. Despite being preventable through vaccination, it remains a significant public health concern in India. In a study published in Apollo Medicine in 2024, we evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (commonly called a KAP study) of people regarding Hepatitis B. The results revealed troubling gaps in awareness — many people we surveyed had limited understanding of how Hepatitis B spreads, who is at risk, and how it can be prevented.
Key Findings: What People Did Not Know
Our study found that while most people had heard of Hepatitis B, their actual knowledge about the disease was often incomplete or inaccurate. Many were unaware that Hepatitis B can spread through contact with infected blood, unsafe injections, and from mother to child during birth. A significant number of respondents did not know that a safe and effective vaccine exists, or that the vaccine is part of India's routine immunisation schedule for newborns. Attitudes toward getting tested and vaccinated were mixed — some expressed willingness, while others showed reluctance due to lack of information or misconceptions about the disease.
Why Community Health Education Is Essential
These knowledge gaps are not just academic findings — they have real consequences. When people do not know how Hepatitis B spreads, they cannot take steps to protect themselves and their families. When they are unaware of the vaccine, they miss out on one of the most effective prevention tools available. Our study underscores the urgent need for community health education programs that explain Hepatitis B in simple, clear language and make testing and vaccination easily accessible. Health awareness should not be limited to hospitals and clinics; it needs to reach schools, workplaces, and community gatherings.
Our Commitment to Preventive Health
At Arise Medical Centre, we believe that awareness is the first step toward prevention. We routinely counsel patients about Hepatitis B, recommend vaccination for those who have not been immunised, and offer screening for those at risk. If you are unsure about your Hepatitis B vaccination status or have questions about liver health, we encourage you to visit us for a simple checkup. Knowledge truly is the best medicine when it comes to preventable diseases.
